Default wind -> heat

Seems like a good idea to me ... wind generator directly to electric
heat (something like an Interthem unit with a water intermediate; none
of that crappy short-wavelength heat) ... no storage except the building
itself holding the heat.

The theory is that when the wind is blowing is when you need extra heat.

Whaddya think?

Sure. Turn one side of a torque converter from an automatic transmission,
inside a water bath. The other side of the torque converter is anchored.
This will expend the energy generated by your turbine, and turn it into
heat energy in the water bath. Move the warm water to where you want it.

Or, use an electric wind turbine, put a resistive load on the output.
Power resistors are pretty cheap and pretty effective (and small). Use
this heat as appropriate.

Take the unregulated DC out from the wind generator, and feed it to
a DC water heater (with higher voltage rating than your turbine can
generate). Use as appropriate.

If you don't need nice clean 60Hz sine wave from a wind system, there's lots
of ways to get heat directly from it. No point in losing some of that
energy out in the power shed converting it to one thing, only to use it
for heat. The ugliest buzzy modified-square wave in the world will
generate heat when you feed it to a resistive device.

turn a large volume of wind into a smaller volume at higher pressure- it has
to give up thermal energy. Ideally with as few moving parts as possible.
Most mechanical energy conversion sucks in efficiency.
How bout' it, home power enthusiasts?

You could simply run a VAWT to turn a magnetic disc positioned over a
large copper, brass or aluminum plate and create a large amount of heat.
Simply circulate it into the house from there. Basically an eddy current
heater.

How about using the drive to power a heat pump?

This way you get more heat energy than the amount of energy the
turbine produces. The cold side needs to be outside and might be prone
to icing.

Perhaps you could dismantle an old freezer and use the components from
this?

I would mention stirling engines too but they are not really within
the realms of DIY. (Although you can purchase plans to build your
own).
