Default Cleaning Mildew from roof shingles ???

My roof shingles are about five years old. They have black stains on them,
and I am pretty sure that it is mildew.

What is the best way to clean them ? Would light pressure-washing be a
good idea ? My painter recommends this, but I am fearful that it will
damage the shingles.

Is there a better approach, and a recommended solvent or other liquid that
would be better than pressure washing ?

Thanks for any helpful advice !!

There are chemicals for this. google roof cleaning services.

and yeah, I wouldn't pressure wash.

Perhaps bleach might do the trick?

A better roof cleaner might be non-toxic oxygen bleach. This widely available powder is mixed with water and applied to a cool roof surface, preferably on an overcast day. If you keep the roof surface wet with the solution for just 20 minutes, and then lightly scrub the roof surface, the algae almost always comes off.

For a while I have also been using bleach. It is quite effective but you have to regularly do it as it doesn’t really prevent mildew or algae from growing back. That’s why I also tried magnesium (zinc and copper are fine too) strips attached to the top part of my roof based on what I read in another forum and it works great. After installing it I never had to do any more cleaning.

If your roof has some repair work to do you might also want to consider replacing the entire roof with algae-resistant shingles if you can afford it.
