The three-way switch has three terminal screws and there you can start to get confusing for most people. The black 'hot' cable connects to the screw terminal marked darker 'COM' for 'common'. The other two terminals are used for wiring of the so-called 'travelers' or leads for the switch.

The three-way switch is always used in pairs and allows a light or a container in and out of two locations. These switches are not "on" or "off" brands and the in and out of positions may vary switches are used.

By using three way switch we may control light from two places, like bottom and top of the stairway, entrance and exit of the room or hall, etc. This saves time, light and money.
